Lois Labrianidis

Professor in the department of economics, Former secretary-general for strategic and private investments,
University of Macedonia, Ministry of Economy and Development, Greece
Lois Labrianidis is professor in the department of economics, University of Macedonia Greece and head of the Regional Development and Planning Research Unit. During 2015-2019 he was secretary general for Investments Ministry of Economy & Development. He is an economic geographer (BA – Aristotelian University of Thessaloniki, MA -Sussex, Ph.D. -LSE).

His scholarly publications include more than 70 papers in peer reviewed journals and 12 books: Provincial universities in Greece; Albanian immigrants in Thessaloniki (co-authored); Economic geography; (editor) The future of Europe’s Rural Periphery (in English); (editor) The Moving Frontier: The Changing Geography of Production in Labour Intensive Industries (in English); (co-editor) Cities on the Verge: Thessaloniki in a Process of Change. Investing in leaving: The Greek case of international migration of professionals and (co-editor) Spatial Development and Human capabilities.

His main research interests are: migration - highly skilled migration, delocalization of economic activities/ FDI, spatial aspects of subcontracting, development of rural areas/ rural entrepreneurship. He was the scientific coordinator of 16 major research projects (e.g. The changing geography of production in labour intensive industries, European Commission FP6 and The future of Europe’s Rural Periphery, EC FP5).

He was a member of the editorial board in European Urban and Regional Studies, and a member of the advisory board of Journal of Immigrant and Refugee Studies. He was guest editor of Regional Studies, 2011 vol. 45(2) and of the Journal of European Planning Studies, 2006 vol. 14(1).
